Scott Driscoll, National Executive Director of The Retailers Association, has today announced a dramatic shift in gear for the Australian retail sector.
“Today, we launch the UNITED RETAIL FEDERATION,” said Mr Driscoll.
The United Retail Federation is the result of months of highly strategic and confidential planning towards what promises to be a revolutionary, new and dynamic era in industry representation for the entire retail sector and Australian retail supply chain.
“As The Retailers Association we had established ourselves as the strongest voice in Australia when it came to advocating for our members and our industry. Now, with a new broader focus and new branding we are about to go a whole lot further.
“As the United Retail Federation, we will not take the approach that many industry groups do and that is to view themselves as an “island”, positioned apart from their supply chain and their employees.
“The United Retail Federation will not only aggressively represent the interests of our members and deliver support and services to retailers themselves, but over coming weeks and months we will be rolling out “Chapters” under the United Retail Federation that will engage with and give voice to suppliers from Australian farmers, manufacturers, transport drivers, importers and also our own retail sector employees.
“The United Retail Federation will be a truly modern Australian industry body, acknowledging and working with the full scope of the retail sector in this country.
“For too long, other organisations claiming to represent the needs of the sector have really been more focused on representing the internal interests of their organisation. As a result we have seen our sector weakened and divided via that internal negativity,” “From today, we see the beginning of a united approach, an approach that will see retailers developing closer ties to Australian farmers and producers at an industry level that will foster domestic rural industry growth, an approach that will see retailers standing shoulder to shoulder with transport operators and working together to force governments to better address the costs of freight movements across a decentralised nation like Australia and also see retail business owners standing shoulder to shoulder with retail workers, delivering positive workplace outcomes and solutions, without the interference of extreme trade unions that often work against unity and prosperity.
“The United Retail Federation can trace back a long and proud pedigree. Over 120 years ago, we commenced as a membership organisation, supporting retailers throughout Queensland. Along the way in more recent times, we have seen other state based organisations such as the New South Wales Retail Traders & Shopkeepers Association roll their membership in under our banner, we have seen various national independent retail banner groups join us and we continue to see growth in our membership in each state.
Via our sector wide focus and a completely revolutionary approach to better representing the retail industry, I know our current and future members will be better off, as will our Australian economy, which enjoys the fact that the retail sector today is the largest collective employment sector in our country.
“I look forward also to working closely with other great organisations that have long been working for their members of our supply chain, in the agricultural sector, manufacturing sector and the transport sector. These discussions have already begun in recent weeks and they are proving our new strategic focus will deliver outcomes not seen before across the retail sector.
“It’s a new day and an exciting future and I look forward to what the United Retail Federation delivers our critical industry sector in years to come and the benefits that will flow through to our broader Australian community from Coast to Coast,” said Mr Driscoll
