CHIC 2010: Chinese Market to Launch Another Golden 10 Years

China clothes industry is going to enter into another golden 10 years. Referring to the demand, people aged between 25 and 29, and those between 35-45 are those of strong purchasing power. They are the target customers of vendors. With the development of rural area, the consumption power of customers in countryside also grows. The clothes market is expanding with a rate of 10% from now to 2030. From a mid and long term perspective, the environment of clothes manufacturers is good. Those who have control in the sales channel and those focus in high-end market will get stronger.

There are some new features of the consumption in China. First, the general income of the customers is growing. The group with annual salary between 40,000 to 100,000 yuan increase than ever before. Second, urban residents have higher purchasing power than those lived in rural area. Third, the expenditure in clothes followed the same rate as the growth of income. Fourth, residents in different cities have different ways in their expense in clothes. Some second and third tier cities even went beyond the first tier cities in the clothes consumption. Fifth, the people aged between 25 and 29, and those between 35-45 are the major target of vendors.

From the above features, we could see that more and more Chinese people get wealthy, and they are willing to spend more money on clothes. The opportunities in some second and third cities in Inner Mongolia, Xinjiang, Henan, Shanxi, Ningxia, Heilongjiang, Liaoning and Jinan, are even better than some first tier cities.

Since the beginning of this year, the export of textile and clothes did not grow as fast as expected. The export for the whole year might be not that optimistic as we anticipated. But the unstable export situation could stimulate more investment for domestic market.

Driscoll - “Retailers are experiencing widespread pain”

Scott Driscoll, National Executive Director of the United Retail Federation, a peak national industry body representing the retail sector has responded to the latest ABS Retail Trade Figures, showing that sales in February fell 1.4%, saying that it was proof the previous rise was “rogue” and retailers are experiencing widespread pain, having to slash prices and cut staff to barely survive.

The latest Retail Trade figures, a Main Economic Indicator (MEI), comes on the back of the latest interest rate rise in March triggered by out of control spending from the Commonwealth Government. Mr Driscoll said that this drop was proof that the January figures were “rogue” and said that small businesses and retailers around the country were experiencing widespread pain.

“The January rise was on the back of a 0.9% drop the month before so any talk of a broad scale recovery was rubbish. What we have consistently said was that any recovery in the sector was ‘patchy’ at best,” Mr Driscoll said.

“Retailers are going into the Easter break with as much uncertainty as they’ve had since the out of control government spending began putting pressure on rates and causing business confidence to plummet.

“If Wayne Swan or anyone else thinks that small businesses and retailers have been ‘saved’ from any financial calamity I’d just say to them, take a trip to Main Street, Australia with me and get a reality check. When a business is forced to slash prices and cut staff that is not the sign of a healthy business sector that is the sign of someone treading water and barely staying afloat.

“It is the entrepreneurial small business and retail sector that are the real heroes of our economy, not Wayne Swan or Kevin Rudd. And this sector has been treated disgracefully by the Rudd Government who has left them high and dry with everything from a roll over on bank consolidations and lack of reform in finance through to their bumbling government spending programs putting more pressure on interest rates and small business.”

Driscoll- “Nick Sherry is the most anti-business Minister ever produced by an Australian Government”

United Retail Federation, a peak national industry body representing the retail sector, has condemned the proposed new provisions in the Tax Laws Amendment Bill 2010 saying it will “aggressively” oppose the changes.

Scott Driscoll, National Executive Director of the United Retail Federation, has today called on the Rudd Government to “rein in this bureaucratic insanity before it totally kills business confidence in Australia” and labeling Assistant Treasurer Nick Sherry “the most anti-business minister in the history of the Australian Government”.

“The Rudd Government needs another straight jacket for Minister Nick Sherry, who is surely set to join the Kevin Rudd Institute for the Bureaucratically Insane, which is now almost full,” Mr Driscoll said.

The proposed laws will now give the tax office more powers to demand security deposits from legitimate businesses all the while casting a broad net to all taxes, including superannuation guarantee and GST payments.

“These destructive provisions will assault each and every person who conducts business. What this does is give Gestapo like supremacy to the tax office that will then have the power to force a small business to put up a security deposit for the tax office. It will give the tax office the ultimate power and allow them to extort even more money from small business that they simply don’t have.

“It’s astonishing that this Minister has been allowed to wreak havoc on the business community following his absolutely insane decision to blindly accept a series of destructive recommendations from the Board of Taxation. On behalf of small business and retailers, I am calling on Mr Rudd to pull this out of control Minister into line.

“Small business and the retail sector are already under attack from the Government with an increased burden on cash flow. Given the Government’s pathetic back-down on bank consolidations which wiped out suitable lending criteria and now they have to contend with a Minister who is nothing short of a business terrorist.”

A New Era for the Retail Sector Launched: UNITED RETAIL FEDERATION

Scott Driscoll, National Executive Director of The Retailers Association, has today announced a dramatic shift in gear for the Australian retail sector.

“Today, we launch the UNITED RETAIL FEDERATION,” said Mr Driscoll.

The United Retail Federation is the result of months of highly strategic and confidential planning towards what promises to be a revolutionary, new and dynamic era in industry representation for the entire retail sector and Australian retail supply chain.

“As The Retailers Association we had established ourselves as the strongest voice in Australia when it came to advocating for our members and our industry. Now, with a new broader focus and new branding we are about to go a whole lot further.

“As the United Retail Federation, we will not take the approach that many industry groups do and that is to view themselves as an “island”, positioned apart from their supply chain and their employees.

“The United Retail Federation will not only aggressively represent the interests of our members and deliver support and services to retailers themselves, but over coming weeks and months we will be rolling out “Chapters” under the United Retail Federation that will engage with and give voice to suppliers from Australian farmers, manufacturers, transport drivers, importers and also our own retail sector employees.

“The United Retail Federation will be a truly modern Australian industry body, acknowledging and working with the full scope of the retail sector in this country.

“For too long, other organisations claiming to represent the needs of the sector have really been more focused on representing the internal interests of their organisation. As a result we have seen our sector weakened and divided via that internal negativity,” “From today, we see the beginning of a united approach, an approach that will see retailers developing closer ties to Australian farmers and producers at an industry level that will foster domestic rural industry growth, an approach that will see retailers standing shoulder to shoulder with transport operators and working together to force governments to better address the costs of freight movements across a decentralised nation like Australia and also see retail business owners standing shoulder to shoulder with retail workers, delivering positive workplace outcomes and solutions, without the interference of extreme trade unions that often work against unity and prosperity.

“The United Retail Federation can trace back a long and proud pedigree. Over 120 years ago, we commenced as a membership organisation, supporting retailers throughout Queensland. Along the way in more recent times, we have seen other state based organisations such as the New South Wales Retail Traders & Shopkeepers Association roll their membership in under our banner, we have seen various national independent retail banner groups join us and we continue to see growth in our membership in each state.

Via our sector wide focus and a completely revolutionary approach to better representing the retail industry, I know our current and future members will be better off, as will our Australian economy, which enjoys the fact that the retail sector today is the largest collective employment sector in our country.

“I look forward also to working closely with other great organisations that have long been working for their members of our supply chain, in the agricultural sector, manufacturing sector and the transport sector. These discussions have already begun in recent weeks and they are proving our new strategic focus will deliver outcomes not seen before across the retail sector.

“It’s a new day and an exciting future and I look forward to what the United Retail Federation delivers our critical industry sector in years to come and the benefits that will flow through to our broader Australian community from Coast to Coast,” said Mr Driscoll
